New Dietary Guidelines

The “new” USDA dietary guidelines have been released.  “New” is in quotes because it’s not really new information.  It just now has the stamp of the USDA on it.  Here’s the short version:

  • Eat a plant-based diet
  • Reduce red and processed meats
  • Eliminate added sugar
  • Don’t worry about the cholesterol in your food
  • Pay attention to your portion sizes (here’s a great guide)
  • Dietary plans are individualistic – all food types can work

Sleep Like a Babe at the Holidays

newborn-sleeping-on-father-s-forearmThere are many things to look forward to at the holidays.   Among them are the usual things:  hanging with friends and family, giving and receiving gifts, the general good cheer of the folks in  your neighborhood and workplace and maybe more free time to contemplate changes at the new year. One benefit that I always look forward to is the chance to get adequate, and regular, sleep.  So maybe you haven’t booked your high-end sleep away holiday or aren’t jetting off to an exotic tropical local for the New Year break.  You could , however, make a conscious effort to rest more. Battling Holiday Bloat: Healthy Eating for the Holidays

You know the feeling.   A bit of bulging at the belt.   A dull fog on the brain.  A subtle sugar rush that doesn’t quite get you past the droopy eyelids and the call of slumber.  If you can’t relate to this holiday post-meal feeling then good for you!  Most of us however know it all too well.

sleepaftereatingAs a younger man my Thanksgiving was spent over-indulging during dinner and then collapsing on the couch or floor to let the images and sounds of the day’s football games on TV wash over me.  It was decent entertainment at the time but I always felt, well, a bit compromised during the experience.  In the last decade or so I’ve been better about stemming the tide of gluttony so I thought I’d share some of my strategies and tactics with you.  Pick a few and try them out this holiday season.
